Traditional views hold that Angela Merici was disturbed by the lack of educational opportunities for girls--particular poor girls. She began to gather small groups of girls and hold classes, sometimes instructing the girls right on the streets with impromptu classes in basic reading, writing and mathematices as well as Christian teachings. Angela Merici was believed to have been active in her activism and work from the 1520's till her death in 1540.
